Free Opera!

The web browser Opera is essentially the non-open source alternative to Firefox. As such, it comes with ads unless you pony up $39. I’ve heard good things about it, but I liked Firefox well enough and saw no reason to pay that much for such a similar program.

If you’re in my situation, or — heaven forfend — you still use Internet Explorer — today’s your lucky day. For one day only, as a celebration of its 10th anniversary, Opera is giving out free registration codes. Try it out! (via)

I mean, what’s wrong with good old Safari? I use Firefox on the PC, and like it well enough, but I don’t see any great advantage over Safari (except for the list of searches).

Oh, Safari’s great. It’s the PC people who use IE that we need to worry about.

That said, there are a bunch of nifty features. Firefox (and Opera) have “Quick Searches”, which let you type in something like “g hen hud” into the address bar and it’ll search Google for Hen Hud. Opera also has mouse gestures, which are shortcuts for common commands (hold control and drag the mouse to the right to go forward a page).

Go on, give it a try.
